This highly detailed open-top hopper features prototypical Erie Railroad livery and represents the workhorse freight cars used to transport coal, ore, gravel, and other bulk materials throughout the Erie’s extensive network in the northeastern United States.
Four-bay hopper cars were essential freight equipment for transporting coal, ore, gravel, sand, and other bulk materials that could withstand exposure to the elements. These open-top cars featured sloped bays with bottom discharge doors, allowing for quick unloading at coal yards, steel mills, and construction sites. The four-bay design provided an optimal balance between capacity and weight distribution.
The Erie Railroad, operating from 1832 to 1960, was a major northeastern railroad serving New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Known for its distinctive diamond logo and role in transporting coal from Pennsylvania’s anthracite fields, the Erie operated thousands of hopper cars to move bulk commodities to industrial centers throughout the region. The railroad merged with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western in 1960 to form the Erie Lackawanna Railway.
