A perfect small town American whistle stop depot. Based on a Milwaukee Road prototype, the original was built in the late 1800’s and still stands today! This depot could be found on a standard gauge or narrow-gauge railroad. Loaded with charm, the Hickson Depot brings us back to a time when life was simpler and America was growing.
The Hickson Depot is based on an authentic Milwaukee Road railroad station from the late 1800s that survives to this day. These small whistle stop depots were the lifeline of rural communities across America, serving as the connection point for passengers, freight, mail, and telegraph communications. The architectural style is typical of late 19th Century railroad construction – practical, durable, and built to serve communities for generations. This depot design was versatile enough to be found on both standard gauge mainlines and narrow-gauge branch lines throughout the American West and Midwest.
The innovative peel-and-stick backing on brackets, windows, and wall trim makes assembly straightforward and enjoyable. No messy gluing of delicate trim pieces – simply peel and apply. The one-piece shingle sheets eliminate hours of tedious individual shingle installation. Combined with the photo and diagram directions, you’ll have your depot assembled and ready for painting in no time.
The Hickson Depot is perfect for creating authentic small-town railroad scenes on your N scale layout:
The natural wood and cast metal components accept paint beautifully. Traditional depot colors include combinations like red with white trim, yellow with brown trim, or the classic Milwaukee Road orange and maroon. Paint the walls, trim, platform, and details in your chosen color scheme. Weather the structure appropriately for your era – pristine for newly built, or aged with peeling paint and weathered wood for decades of service. Add details like interior lighting visible through windows, figures on the platform, and baggage carts or hand trucks for freight operations.
Enhance realism by adding details around your depot. Install the included town name boards, Railway Express signs, and telegraph signs in appropriate locations. Create a small parking area with period automobiles, add a baggage wagon or truck, and position figures waiting for trains or conducting railroad business. Landscape with appropriate vegetation, add a gravel or dirt road leading to the depot, and consider including a water tower, coal bin, or section house nearby. The train order signal adds authentic operational detail – position it where the engineer can see it from approaching trains.
The Hickson Depot brings us back to a time when life was simpler and America was growing. Every small town depot has stories – the station agent who knew everyone in town, the excitement when the daily train arrived, the packages and mail that connected rural communities to the wider world. Create scenes that tell these stories: passengers boarding with luggage, freight being loaded, the telegraph operator at work, or townspeople gathering to meet the train.
