Historic Pioneer Zephyr – A Railroad Legend

Introduced in 1934 during the Great Depression, the Pioneer Zephyr was designed as a “train of the future” to revive passenger rail travel. On May 26, 1934, it made history by completing a1,015-mile Denver to Chicago run in just over 13 hours, reaching speeds of over 112 mph— a journey that previously took nearly two days.

As the first of nine Zephyr trainsets built for Burlington, it helped usher in the era of diesel-powered passenger service and remains one of the most recognizable trains ever produced.
