About the Early Challenger

The Union Pacific Challenger class locomotives were among the most powerful and successful articulated steam engines ever built. The CSA-2 class, built in the early 1940s, featured a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement that provided exceptional power for freight service while maintaining the speed capabilities needed for fast freight operations. These locomotives were instrumental in moving wartime traffic across Union Pacific’s vast network during World War II and continued in service well into the diesel era.
