In 1965, at the 12th Tokyo Motor Show, the venue was filled with excitement and anticipation. At the center of this atmosphere, a single car made its appearance at the very moment its name was announced.

It was the debut of the Toyota 2000GT—one of the most iconic and celebrated cars in the history of Japanese automobiles. With its sleek body, Toyota’s first DOHC engine for a passenger car, a rosewood-paneled dashboard, and a mahogany wood steering wheel, the car showcased exceptional craftsmanship made possible through the collaboration with Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd., the development partner.

After its introduction, the 2000GT gained further recognition when its prototype entered racing competitions, achieving a 1–2 finish in only its second race. It also challenged FIA and JAF–certified endurance speed trials, setting three new world records and thirteen international records, further raising expectations. Finally, in April 1967, Toyota released what would become its world-class, flagship grand touring car.
