About the Yakovlev Yak-1b

The Yak-1b was an improved variant of the Yak-1 fighter, one of the most successful Soviet aircraft of World War II. Designed by Alexander Yakovlev, the Yak-1b featured enhanced visibility with a cut-down rear fuselage and all-around vision canopy, improved aerodynamics, and better handling characteristics. Powered by the Klimov M-105PF engine, the Yak-1b was highly maneuverable and well-suited for low to medium altitude combat on the Eastern Front.

The Yak-1b served as the mount for many of the Soviet Union’s top aces, who appreciated its excellent maneuverability, reliable performance, and rugged construction. These fighters played crucial roles in achieving air superiority over the Eastern Front from 1943 onwards, participating in major operations including the Battle of Kursk and the liberation of Ukraine.
