About the P-39Q Airacobra

The P-39Q represented the final and most produced variant of Bell’s revolutionary Airacobra fighter, with over 4,900 units built—more than any other P-39 version. This variant featured the distinctive mid-mounted Allison V-1710 engine positioned behind the pilot, driving the propeller through an extension shaft. This unique configuration allowed for the powerful 37mm M4 cannon firing through the propeller hub, supplemented by wing-mounted .50 caliber machine guns.

The P-39Q incorporated numerous improvements over earlier variants, including a four-blade propeller, underwing hardpoints for bombs or drop tanks, and refined aerodynamics. While American forces gradually transitioned to newer fighters, the P-39Q found extensive service with Soviet forces under Lend-Lease, where it excelled in the low-altitude combat typical of the Eastern Front. The type also served with Italian Co-Belligerent forces after Italy’s surrender and with Polish units in the final stages of the war.

The P-39Q’s combination of heavy firepower, good low-altitude performance, and tricycle landing gear made it particularly effective in ground-attack roles and air superiority missions at the altitudes where most combat occurred on the Eastern Front and Pacific theaters.
