About the P-39N Airacobra

The P-39 Airacobra stands as one of World War II’s most innovative and distinctive fighters. Bell Aircraft’s revolutionary design featured a mid-mounted Allison V-1710 engine positioned behind the pilot, driving the propeller through an extension shaft. This unique configuration allowed for a powerful 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub, along with tricycle landing gear—both highly unusual features for the era.

The P-39N represented the first truly mass-produced Airacobra variant, with over 2,000 units built. While American forces gradually replaced their P-39Ns with newer types by late 1943, the aircraft found its true calling with Soviet forces under the Lend-Lease program. More than half of all Airacobras went to the USSR, where the type excelled in the low-altitude combat typical of the Eastern Front. Soviet pilots achieved extraordinary success with the P-39N—five of the top ten Soviet aces flew Airacobras, and elite Guards regiments considered it their preferred mount.

The aircraft also served with distinction in French and Italian units, remaining in active frontline service until war’s end. Its combination of heavy firepower, good low-altitude performance, and rugged construction made it particularly effective in ground-attack and air superiority roles at the altitudes where most Eastern Front combat occurred.
