Historical Development

The 2S23 Nona-SVK self-propelled mortar system was developed in the late 1980s as a wheeled variant of the successful tracked 2S9 Nona-S, which had been designed for Soviet air assault divisions. The 2S23 Nona-SVK was specially developed for Soviet motorized infantry units, utilizing an 8×8 wheeled chassis that provided superior road mobility and reduced logistical burden compared to tracked vehicles.

First production vehicles were delivered in 1990, just as the Soviet Union was entering its final years. Despite this timing, the system proved successful enough to be exported to Venezuela and continues to serve in various armed forces today.
