About the SPAD XIII
The SPAD S.XIII entered service in 1917 and quickly became the standard French fighter, eventually equipping 81 squadrons. Powered by a 220hp Hispano-Suiza 8Be engine, the SPAD XIII could reach speeds of 135 mph and climb to 21,815 feet. Armed with twin synchronized Vickers machine guns or optionally a 37mm cannon, it proved to be a deadly adversary. The aircraft’s robust construction allowed it to survive damage that would destroy other fighters, making it beloved by pilots.
