This iconic heavy-lift helicopter played a crucial role in the final evacuation of Saigon in April 1975, marking the dramatic conclusion of the Vietnam War.
Operation Frequent Wind was the largest helicopter evacuation in history, conducted on April 29-30, 1975. The CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters flew continuous missions from the U.S. Embassy in Saigon and other evacuation points, rescuing over 7,000 people in less than 24 hours. These powerful aircraft became symbols of both the end of American involvement in Vietnam and the heroic efforts to save lives during the fall of Saigon.
The Sikorsky CH-53D Sea Stallion was the U.S. Marine Corps’ primary heavy-lift helicopter during the Vietnam War era. Powered by two General Electric T64 turboshaft engines, the Sea Stallion could carry up to 37 troops or 8,000 pounds of cargo. Its distinctive features included a rear loading ramp, folding tail boom for shipboard operations, and exceptional reliability in demanding combat conditions. The CH-53D’s performance during Operation Frequent Wind demonstrated its capabilities under the most challenging circumstances.
