USSBlue Ridge(LCC-19) was commissioned onNovember 14, 1970, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Designed as one of the most sophisticated command and control platforms in the U.S. Navy, the ship displaces approximately18,000 tons, measures196 meters in length, has a33-meter beam, and is capable of speeds up to23 knots.
From 1971 through 1979, USSBlue Ridgeoperated out of San Diego, California, regularly deploying to the Western Pacific. During this period, the ship earned both theMeritorious Unit Commendationand theNavy Unit Commendationfor her role in the evacuation of Saigon in 1975.
In October 1979, USSBlue Ridgebecame forward deployed to Japan, where she has since served as the flagship of the Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet. The ship also played a key role as flagship for Commander, United States Naval Forces Central Command duringOperations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990–1991).
Notably, USSBlue Ridgeconducted a historic port visit to Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, in May 1989, highlighting her importance in U.S. naval diplomacy and forward presence operations.
