This special Centenary Anniversary edition commemorates 100 years since the tragic maiden voyage of the world’s most famous ocean liner, offering modelers a chance to recreate this iconic vessel in stunning detail.
This special edition kit was released to mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking on April 15, 1912. The kit features enhanced details and premium packaging to honor the memory of the 1,517 passengers and crew who lost their lives in one of history’s most tragic maritime disasters.
RMS Titanic was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner of her time, built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line. Measuring 882 feet in length and displacing 46,328 gross tons, the Titanic was considered ‘unsinkable’ due to her advanced safety features including 16 watertight compartments. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the ship struck an iceberg at 11:40 PM on April 14, 1912, and sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean. The disaster led to major improvements in maritime safety regulations, including adequate lifeboats for all passengers and 24-hour radio watch.
The RMS Titanic was powered by two reciprocating four-cylinder, triple-expansion steam engines and one low-pressure Parsons turbine, driving three propellers. The ship could carry 2,435 passengers and 892 crew members, making her one of the largest moving objects ever built at the time. Titanic featured unprecedented luxury for first-class passengers, including a swimming pool, Turkish bath, gymnasium, and grand staircase. The ship’s design incorporated the latest technology, including electric elevators, a Marconi wireless telegraph system, and watertight compartments controlled by electric doors.
Titanic departed Southampton on April 10, 1912, with stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland, before heading across the Atlantic. The ship carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Europe seeking a new life in America. Despite receiving ice warnings, the ship maintained near-maximum speed through an ice field. The collision with the iceberg opened the ship’s hull to the sea, flooding six of the sixteen compartments—more than the ship could survive. The inadequate number of lifeboats (only enough for 1,178 people) and the ‘women and children first’ protocol resulted in a disproportionate loss of male passengers and crew.
