The series of 9 Avisos-escort ships, including the Victor Schœlcher (first ship to be commissioned) and the Commandant Rivière, was built between 1957 and 1963. Air-conditioned ships designed for representation and escort in the most varied climates, they could receive a high-ranking personality, or a senior officer and his staff, or briefly transport a commando of 80 men. A light helicopter could land on the back.
