Historical Background:

The M10 GMC (Gun Motor Carriage) was the most widely produced American tank destroyer of World War II, with over 6,400 built between 1942 and 1943. Nicknamed the “Wolverine” by the British, the M10 was built on a modified M4 Sherman chassis and featured a distinctive open-topped turret mounting a powerful 3-inch (76.2MM) M7 anti-tank gun. The sloped armor design provided improved protection while keeping weight down for better mobility. The M10’s primary mission was to seek out and destroy enemy armor, operating in dedicated tank destroyer battalions that could be rapidly deployed to counter German tank attacks. The open-topped turret, while leaving the crew vulnerable to artillery and air attack, provided excellent visibility and ventilation, crucial advantages in the heat of battle. M10s saw extensive service in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe, proving particularly effective against German Panzer IVs and early Panthers. Many M10s were also supplied to Allied forces, with the British often fitting them with their superior 17-pounder gun, creating the “Achilles” variant. The M10 remained in service through the end of the war and continued with various armies into the 1950s.
