About the F/A-18A+ Hornet
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18A+ Hornet is a twin-engine, supersonic, all-weather multirole combat jet designed for both fighter and attack missions. The ‘A+’ designation indicates aircraft upgraded with improved avionics and systems while retaining the original F/A-18A airframe. Powered by two General Electric F404 turbofan engines, the Hornet can reach speeds exceeding Mach 1.8 and is armed with a 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon plus a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons on nine external hardpoints.
Marine Corps Service
The F/A-18 Hornet has been the backbone of Marine Corps tactical aviation since the 1980s, replacing the F-4 Phantom II and A-4 Skyhawk.
